Langs hom voel jou eie argumente skielik baie klein.

Wat waar is

Begin by wat waar is. Hawking was ’n reus.

Lees hom nou stadig.

Wat ’n wet doen

“Omdat daar ’n wet soos swaartekrag is.”

Volgende keer

As iemand Hawking aanhaal, sê eers: “Hy was ’n briljante fisikus.”

Gaan dieper

Laws don’t create universes, not even Hawking’s

Short answer: Hawking said the universe can create itself because there is a law such as gravity. But a law describes how things behave once there are things. It has never made anything.

You are in a class, or in a conversation that is going well, and someone plays his trump card. “Stephen Hawking said the universe doesn’t need God.” And that’s that. Who are you to argue with Hawking?

Hawking was one of the sharpest physicists of his time. Next to him your own arguments suddenly feel very small.

What is true

Start with what is true. Hawking was a giant. Among other things he showed that black holes are not entirely black, but slowly give off radiation. Nobody needs to belittle his physics in order to question his philosophy.

And he did say it. In 2010 he and Leonard Mlodinow published The Grand Design. In it they write: “Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.”

That is the sentence the newspapers seized on. Now read it slowly.

What a law does

“Because there is a law such as gravity.” So the sentence does not start from nothing. Before there is a universe, there is already a law. That alone is enough to ask where the law comes from.

But there is a deeper problem. What does a law of nature actually do?

Newton’s law of gravity tells you how fast an apple falls. It has never made an apple. The rules of the road tell you how cars should drive. No traffic rule has ever built a car or climbed in behind the wheel. A law is a pattern: if there is mass, then this happens. With nothing to apply to, it is a pattern of nothing.

And look at the word “itself”. To create yourself, you have to exist before you exist. That is not a marvellous feat of physics. It is a knot in the sentence.

The turn

Christians need not be afraid of the laws of nature. We believe the steady order of nature is precisely God’s faithfulness. Through Jeremiah the Lord says that he himself established his covenant with day and night, and the fixed laws of heaven and earth (Jeremiah 33:25).

That is why Hawking did not rule God out. He only moved the question back to where it has always stood. The question was never what gave the first push. The question is why there is a world that laws can govern at all. God is not a competitor to gravity. He is the reason there is anything that can be heavy.

Next time

When someone quotes Hawking, say first: “He was a brilliant physicist.” Then ask: “Where was the law of gravity before there was anything to be heavy?”

It is a physics question that physics cannot answer. That’s a good place to start a conversation.
