Vraag 31: Waarom word Hy “Christus”, dit is Gesalfde, genoem? Antwoord: Omdat Hy deur God die Vader verordineer is¹ en met die Heilige Gees gesalf is² om ons hoogste Profeet en Leraar³, ons enigste Hoëpriester⁴ en ons ewige Koning⁵ te wees, daarom: as Profeet en Leraar het Hy aan ons die hele raad en wil van God oor ons verlossing volkome bekend gemaak⁶; as Hoëpriester het Hy Homself as ‘n eenmalige offer vir ons gegee en ons met die Vader versoen⁷; en as Koning regeer Hy ons deur sy Woord en Gees, en beskerm en bewaar ons in die saligheid wat Hy vir ons verwerf het⁸.

Vraag 32: Waarom word jy ‘n Christen genoem? Antwoord: Omdat ek deur die geloof ‘n lid van Christus is¹ en so deel het aan sy salwing², sodat ek sy Naam kan bely³, myself as ‘n lewende dankoffer aan Hom kan toewy⁴, en in hierdie lewe teen die sonde en die duiwel met ‘n vrye en goeie gewete kan stry⁵ en hierna in ewigheid saam met Hom oor al die skepsels kan regeer⁶.

Question 31: Why is he called “Christ,” that is, Anointed? Answer: Because he has been ordained by God the Father¹ and anointed with the Holy Spirit² to be our chief Prophet and Teacher³, our only High Priest⁴, and our eternal King⁵. As Prophet and Teacher he has fully made known to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption⁶; as High Priest he has offered himself as the one sacrifice for us and intercedes for us with the Father⁷; and as King he governs us by his Word and Spirit, and defends and preserves us in the salvation he has won for us⁸.

Question 32: Why are you called a Christian? Answer: Because by faith I am a member of Christ¹ and so share in his anointing², so that I may confess his name³, offer myself a living sacrifice of thankfulness to him⁴, and with a free and good conscience fight against sin and the devil in this life⁵, and hereafter reign with him eternally over all creatures⁶.
