Sondag 44Lord's Day 44

Sondag 44

Skrifverwysings: 1: Romeine 7:14-15 2: Psalm 1:2; Romeine 7:22

Lord’s Day 44

Question 113: What does the tenth commandment require of us? Answer: That even the least inclination or thought against any of God’s commandments never arise in our heart;¹ but that at all times we hate all sin with our whole heart² and delight in all righteousness.³

Scripture References: 1: Romans 7:7–8 2: Galatians 5:17 3: Matthew 5:6

Question 114: But can those who are converted to God keep these commandments perfectly? Answer: No, but even the holiest, so long as they are in this life, have only a small beginning of this obedience;¹ yet so that with earnest purpose they begin to live not only according to some but according to all the commandments of God.²

Scripture References: 1: Romans 7:14–15 2: Psalm 1:2; Romans 7:22

Question 115: Why then does God have the ten commandments preached so strictly since no one can keep them in this life? Answer: First, that all our life long we may learn more and more to know our sinful nature,¹ and so the more earnestly seek forgiveness of sins and righteousness in Christ.² Second, that we constantly and diligently pray to God for the grace of the Holy Spirit, that we may become more and more renewed after the image of God, till we arrive at the goal of perfection after this life.³
