Sondag 29

Lord’s Day 29
Question 78: Are the bread and the wine then changed into the real body and blood of Christ? Answer: No, for just as the water of baptism is not changed into the blood of Christ nor is it the washing away of sins itself, so also the bread in the Lord’s supper does not become the body of Christ itself,¹ although it is called the body of Christ in keeping with the nature and usage of sacraments.²

Question 79: Why then does Christ call the bread His body and the cup His blood, or the new covenant in His blood, and Paul, the participation in the body and blood of Christ? Answer: Christ speaks this way for a good reason: He wants to teach us by it that just as certainly as we receive and taste with our mouths these holy signs as pledges, so certainly has He offered His body for us on the cross and shed His blood for us.¹ By these signs and pledges He also wants to assure us, through the working of the Holy Spirit, that we share in His true body and blood,² so that we are more and more united with His sacred body.³
