Vraag 59: Maar wat help dit jou nou dat jy dit alles glo? Antwoord: Dat ek in Christus voor God geregverdig is¹ en ‘n erfgenaam van die ewige lewe².

Vraag 60: Hoe is jy regverdig voor God? Antwoord: Slegs deur ‘n ware geloof in Jesus Christus¹. Al kla my gewete my aan dat ek teen al die gebooie van God swaar gesondig het en geen daarvan gehou het nie², en dat ek nog altyd tot alle kwaad geneig is³, tog skenk God my, sonder enige verdienste van my kant, uit loutere genade⁴, die volkome genoegdoening, geregtigheid en heiligheid van Christus⁵. Dit reken Hy my toe asof ek nooit sonde gehad of gedoen het nie, ja, asof ek self al die gehoorsaamheid volbring het wat Christus vir my volbring het⁶, in soverre ek hierdie weldaad met ‘n gelowige hart aanneem⁷.

Vraag 61: Waarom sê jy dat jy slegs deur die geloof regverdig is? Antwoord: Nie dat ek deur die waarde van my geloof vir God aanvaar word nie, maar omdat alleen die genoegdoening van Christus, sy geregtigheid en heiligheid my geregtigheid voor God is¹, en ek dit nie anders kan aanneem en my eie kan maak nie as alleen deur die geloof².

Question 59: But what does it help you now that you believe all this? Answer: That I am righteous in Christ before God¹ and an heir of eternal life.²

Question 60: How are you righteous before God? Answer: Only by true faith in Jesus Christ.¹ Although my conscience accuses me that I have grievously sinned against all God’s commandments and have never kept any of them,² and that I am still inclined to all evil,³ yet God, without any merit of my own, out of mere grace,⁴ grants and imputes to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ.⁵ He imputes these to me as if I had never had nor committed any sin, indeed, as if I myself had accomplished all the obedience which Christ has rendered for me,⁶ if only I accept this gift with a believing heart.⁷

Question 61: Why do you say that you are righteous only by faith? Answer: Not that I am acceptable to God on account of the worthiness of my faith, but because only the satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ is my righteousness before God,¹ and I can receive and apply it to myself in no other way than by faith alone.²
