Vraag 116: Waarom is gebed vir Christene nodig? Antwoord: Omdat dit die vernaamste deel van die dankbaarheid is wat God van ons eis¹, en omdat God sy genade en Heilige Gees net aan dié wil gee wat Hom sonder ophou daarom bid en Hom daarvoor dank².

Vraag 117: Wat behoort tot ‘n gebed wat God behaag en deur Hom verhoor word? Antwoord: Eerstens dat ons die enigste ware God wat Hom in sy Woord aan ons geopenbaar het, om alles bid wat Hy ons beveel het om van Hom te vra¹. Tweedens dat ons ons geestelike en liggaamlike nood reg leer ken² en voor sy aangesig diep verootmoedig³. Derdens dat ons hierdie vaste grond het dat Hy ons gebed om die ontwil van Christus sekerlik wil verhoor soos Hy ons in sy Woord belowe het⁴.

Vraag 119: Wat is daardie gebed? Antwoord: Ons Vader wat in die hemele is, laat u Naam geheilig word. Laat u koninkryk kom. Laat u wil geskied, soos in die hemel net so ook op die aarde. Gee ons vandag ons daaglikse brood, en vergeef ons ons skulde, soos ons ook ons skuldenaars vergewe. En lei ons nie in versoeking nie, maar verlos ons van die bose. Want aan U behoort die koninkryk en die krag en die heerlikheid tot in ewigheid. Amen.

Question 116: Why is prayer necessary for Christians? Answer: Because prayer is the most important part of the thankfulness which God requires of us,¹ and because God will give His grace and Holy Spirit only to those who sincerely ask Him for these gifts in prayer, without ceasing, and who thank Him for them.²

Question 117: What belongs to a prayer which pleases God and is heard by Him? Answer: First, that from the heart we call upon the one true God only, who has revealed Himself in His Word, for all that He has commanded us to ask of Him.¹ Second, that we thoroughly know our need and misery, so that we may humble ourselves in the presence of His majesty.² ³ Third, that we rest on this firm foundation: that although we do not deserve it, God will certainly hear our prayer for the sake of Christ our Lord, as He has promised us in His Word.⁴

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
