Vraag 96: Wat eis God in die tweede gebod? Antwoord: Dat ons God op geen ander manier afbeeld as wat Hy self in sy Woord beveel het nie¹. En dat ons Hom op geen ander manier vereer as wat Hy self beveel het nie².

Vraag 97: Mag ons dan glad nie ‘n beeld van God maak nie? Antwoord: Nee, want geen skepsel kan God afbeeld nie¹, en alhoewel die skepsels afgebeeld mag word, verbied God tog om beeld of afbeelding van hulle te maak met die doel om dit te vereer of God daardeur te dien².

Vraag 98: Maar mag ons nie beelde as boeke vir die leke in die kerke toelaat nie? Antwoord: Nee, want ons mag nie wyser wil wees as God nie, wat sy Christene nie deur stomme beelde nie, maar deur die lewendige verkondiging van sy Woord wil onderrig¹.

Question 96: What does God require in the second commandment? Answer: That we in no wise make any image of God,¹ nor worship Him in any other way than He has commanded in His Word.²

Question 97: May we not make any image at all? Answer: God cannot and may not be visibly portrayed in any way.¹ Although creatures may be portrayed, yet God forbids making or having any likeness of them in order to worship them or to serve God by them.²
