Vraag 122: Wat is die eerste bede? Antwoord: “Laat u Naam geheilig word” beteken: Gee ons eerstens dat ons U reg ken¹, U heilig, loof en prys in al u werke waarin u almag, wysheid, goedheid, geregtigheid, barmhartigheid en waarheid helder skyn². Gee ons tweedens dat ons hele lewe – gedagtes, woorde en werke – daarop gerig is dat u Naam om ons ontwil nie gelaster word nie³, maar geëer en geloof word⁴.

Answer: “Hallowed be Thy name” means: Grant us first of all that we may rightly know Thee,¹ and sanctify, glorify, and praise Thee in all Thy works, in which Thy power, wisdom, goodness, righteousness, mercy, and truth shine forth.² Grant us also that we may so direct our whole life — our thoughts, words, and deeds — that Thy name is not blasphemed because of us,³ but honoured and praised.⁴
